SAVANNAH, Ga., June 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hemmings Motor News "Great Race" rolled down River Street in Savannah, Georgia on June 28th with over 80 cars that ranged from a 1915 Hudson to that famous 1969 Dodge Charger - The General Lee. One of those lucky drivers is going to win $50,000 which is not a bad haul for driving from Maine to Florida in 9 days. Savannah is a fitting stop, with its equally famous "Great Savannah Races" which included the First American Grand Prix in 1908.

"Savannah is the perfect spot for an event like The Great Race," says Tanya A. Bailey, author of The First American Grand Prix: The Savannah Auto Races 1908-1911. "Only a few cities like Savannah had significant endurance racing events, and it was the best way to develop automobile technology and road building techniques."

Indeed, The Great Race and events like it are a welcome sight to the growing number of classic car enthusiasts who travel up and down the East Coast. "This is a big trend," says Bailey. "Our own history as the Home of America's first Grand Prix race is finally gaining national and international attention. There is a rapidly growing thirst for these events. But we need more events like this that reflect our racing history in Savannah."

Tanya A. Bailey is the founder and owner of The Great Savannah Races Museum at 411 Abercorn Street in Savannah, Georgia.
