Star Trek Writer Damon Lindelof Apologizes For ‘Gratuitous' Alice Eve Stripping Scene

Posted:

"Star Trek Into Darkness" has drawn the ire of some fans and critics for a scene in which brilliant scientist Dr. Carol Marcus (played by Alice Eve) strips down to her bra and panties – a move many have suggested unnecessarily undercuts the character's intelligence.

Damon Lindelof, the sci-fi sequel's co-writer and producer, took to Twitter this week to answer the criticism, admitting the random scene was "gratuitous."

"I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress," he Tweeted on Monday, before adding, "We also had Kirk shirtless in underpants in both movies. Do not want to make light of something that some construe as mysogenistic [sic]."

After many of the writer's followers responded with varying opinions, Damon again apologized.

"What I'm saying is I hear you, I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future," he Tweeted, "Also, I need to learn how to spell ‘misogynistic.'"

The former "Lost" scribe was prompted to address the issue after discussing the scene with MTV News over the weekend.

"Why is Alice Eve in her underwear, gratuitously and unnecessarily, without any real effort made as to why in God's name she would undress in that circumstance? Well there's a very good answer for that," he told MTV. "But I'm not telling you what it is. Because… uh… MYSTERY?"
