"We are proud to be a part of this nation-wide event," explains St Peters Pastor Elder Leander Blackman And his Associate Elder Elroy L Wilson Director of Repent and Believe Ministries of Knoxville Tn.
SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the name given to a mysterious baby killer that takes the lives of between 2000 and 3000 infants each year in the US. It is the number one cause of death in infants between one month and one year of age. SIDS is sudden and unexpected and even after an autopsy no cause of death is found. In a typical situation, parents check on their infant they think is sleeping only to find their baby dead. There is no greater tragedy!
Spring-for-SIDS Day is especially important to African American Community Company. Most African American are aware of events such as Sickle cell Anemia or Diabetes claiming the lives of a love one but very few are aware of the silent killer known as SIDS. We are losing Brilliant minds that we have never gotten the chance to see, hear hug or enjoy the creativity process of their thought process. We often hear about young African American youth ages 14-17 losing their babies. Newborn preemies are at the highest risk with babies 3-4 who had a very low birth weight are also at risk even those who have almost reach 1 year of age. The African American community for years have taught place the baby on his/her stomach so the infant can be comfortable , but as with most things we find out this is just but one of the cause of SIDS plush stuffed animals a too soft mattress , and in some cases mothers who are just too immature , and are babies themselves. Factors that also lead up to SIDS related deaths in young African American are Low birth rate Lack of Prenatal care, failure of mother to maintain a proper diet and the use of Alcohol smoke and drug use. Stomach sleeping carries the highest risk for SIDS—between 1.7 and 12.9 times the risk of back sleeping. The side-lying position also increases the risk. It is unstable and babies can easily roll to their stomach. Back sleeping carries the lowest risk for SIDS and is safest. African-American babies are two-and-a-half times more likely to be affected by SIDS than Caucasian babies, while Native American infants are three times more susceptible. SIDS occurs in up to two of every 1,000 live births .The facts on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are staggering. In the United States alone, more than 2,500 babies die each year from SIDS, with thousands more unexpectedly dying around the world. While research shows that the
Rate has slowed the African American Community still has the highest SIDS rate.
Every day unfortunate parents all over the world experience this heartbreak. Dr. McEntire, with the American SIDS Institute has worked with SIDS since 1976. "We have seen a tremendous decline in the incidence of SIDS since I began", she explained. "However, we still cannot tell parents why their infant died. They are left with no closure."
We don't know the exact cause of SIDS, and there is no way to guarantee an infant will not die," says Dr. McEntire. "However," she explains, "there are proven ways to reduce the risk of an infant dying suddenly". "Don't smoke during pregnancy and don't let anyone smoke around your baby. Always place your baby to sleep on his or her back in a bare crib. Keep the crib close to the parents' bed. Instead of using cover, put enough clothing on the baby to keep him/her warm but not too warm." For a full list see www.sids.org.
